Welcome to my website of photographs from various motorsport events held in Scotland from the 1970s until the early 1990s.

This was the period of time when I was most active with my camera at events, particularly Scottish stage rallying which makes up the vast majority of the material on the website.

I previously operated a website called scottish-rallying-archives.co.uk but decided to revamp and rename the site to include photos I also have in my collection from various race meetings at Ingliston and Knockhill circuits - plus the odd sprint and rallycross photo.

Apart from the Modern Stuff section (which has images from a digital SLR camera), all photos were shot on 35mm film and have been brought kicking and screaming into the digital age courtesy of a Nikon 4000ED film scanner. Although this is a discontinued piece of equipment it is very good at its job.

The website is very much a "work in progress" project as there are still a number of circuit racing negatives I need to scan and add to the site.  Despite trying to keep things organised and storing the majority of negatives in lever arch files, no doubt there will still be some lurking away in shoe boxes and other such places!

A bit for the technophobes! I have encountered the frustrating issue of enhanced grain in some of the scans I have already done. This would appear to have happened when I started using a third party scanning software - Vuescan - after upgrading my PC to one with Windows 7 installed. It was only after carrying out this hardware upgrade that I became aware that Nikon's own scan software, which came bundled with the scanner, refused to work on a 64-bit operating system as Nikon had not produced suitably updated driver files. I therefore bought Vuescan after reading good reviews about it but one of the downsides would appear to be excessive grain in certain images, something I did not experience with the Nikon program. My intention now is to utilise my old PC purely for film scanning purposes, therefore I would hope to re-scan the worst affected photos and re-publish them to the website. That is the great master plan but you know what Robert Burns said about "the best laid schemes o' mice and men". In the meantime I hope the "grainy" images don't spoil things too much!

I hope you enjoy your visit to the site - please use the menu at the top of the page to find your way around.

If you have any comments on the photos, please contact me at  frank@raceandrally.co.uk.
